The East door - The Gates of Paradise

In 1425 Ghiberti received the commission to create the east doors, the main entrance to the baptistery. The layout is different: here there are 10 large rectangular panels. They show images of the Old Testament, starting top left with the creation of Adam and Eve. The increased size of the panels allowed greater narrative possibilities: they incorporate perspective, unheard of when the earlier doors were made. The panels show more than one episode, and many figures are involved.  The Joseph panel, for example, is said to show Joseph thrown into the Well, being sold to the merchants, being delivered to the pharaoh, Interpreting the Pharaoh's dream,  and being paid honour by the Pharoah. The story continues:  Jacob sends His sons to Egypt and Joseph recognizes them and returns home. Good luck on identifying all of these! The framework shows fruit and foliage, small statues of saints and  24 busts, including one of Ghiberti's father and one of himself.
Michelangelo was hugely impressed: he called them ‘The Gates of Paradise’ and the name has stuck. It was a long job: Ghiberti and his workshop took 27 years to complete them.
The originals are now in the Museo dell'Opera del Duomo, and have been replaced by replicas.
As you will see from the top image, the panels are gilded, but they are shown here in black and white as this makes it easier to see what is happening.
