Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port

Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port (Saint John at the foot of the pass) is a small French town, just five miles from the Spanish border. it is the starting point of the Way of St James, the Camino de Santiago. Traditionally, this begins at the Gate of St  James, below.

Before we set off, a visit to the town church is in order, Notre-Dame-du-Bout-du-Pont. In comparison with most of the Spanish churches we will encounter later, it is somewhat austere.
