Santiago de Compostela

At last we have reached our final destination!
At some time between 820 and 840  the discovery of what were claimed to be the relics of St James happened here, and the tradition of pilgrimage began. For 1200 years the economy of the town, now a city, has depended on those pilgrims. The highlight is, of course, the cathedral, built over the site of that discovery, and the magnificent plaza. The city itself is attractive, though inevitably full of tourist shops.
