| Santo Domingo de la Calzada | |
Santo Domingo de la Calzada (Saint Dominic of the Causeway) was founded by Dominic in the 11th century to facilitate pilgrimage. He built a church, a hostel and a bridge over the river Oja. Legend tells us that he was responsible for many miracles: we will meet the best known very soon. Our first stop was the present-day pilgrimage hostel. Into the garden to see a cage of white chickens. Then to the cathedral of Santo Domingo, and, believe it or not, more chickens - live ones! So why chickens? They are a symbol of that best known miracle of Santo Domingo - bringing two roast chickens back to life! So why did he do that? Read about it here. The legend of Santo Domingo and the chickens. |
