Santa Maria Maggiore

The first cathedral of Assisi. Legend dates its founding to the fourth century by Saint Savino, the bishop that followed Rufino, though the oldest part of the present church dates from the ninth or tenth century. The building has suffered severe earthquake damage over the years, most significantly in 1832 but also in 1997. These destroyed many of the frescos, but some have been restored and are on display, detached, in the church.
On the right of the church is the Bishop's palace, Palazzo Vescovile. It was here that, according to Legend, St Francis cast off his clothes.
