Santa Maria Maggiore - the crypt

On our visit, the entrance to the crypt was open, so we wandered in and had a look round. Eventually a tour guide shooed us out, as it is only possible to visit the crypt, it  seems, by paying for an (expensive) guided walking tour.  Unfortunately we had to go before seeing the remains of the Roman Villa incorporated in the crypt.  This has some remarkable Roman frescos - the picture at the bottom of the page was not taken by me.
The pillars and capitals in the crypt have been reused from a Roman building.
